What this guide covers

Use this guide when respondents can’t start recording, camera or microphone access is blocked, recording fails in a mobile browser, the video recording button is disabled, or the internet connection drops during a recording.

Start with the quick diagnosis. It resolves most cases and keeps respondents from getting stuck while you investigate.

Quick diagnosis

  1. Check browser permissions. Confirm that camera and microphone are allowed for the form page.
  2. Close competing apps and tabs. Other active tools can lock the camera or microphone.
  3. Turn on a fallback mode. Enable Voice or Text so people can finish the form without recording video.
  4. Retest on another browser or device. This quickly shows whether the problem is local to one device.

Mobile-specific checks

  • Recheck camera and microphone permissions at both the operating system and the browser level.
  • Reopen the form in a fresh tab and try again.
  • Use an updated browser version when possible.

The video recording button is disabled

  1. Reproduce the issue with one controlled test and note the exact browser, device, and question.
  2. Confirm the prerequisite settings: Video is enabled as a reply mode on that question, and camera and microphone permissions are granted.
  3. Apply the smallest fix first, then retest with the same scenario.
  4. Make sure Voice or Text is enabled so respondents can continue in the meantime.

The internet connection drops during recording

  1. Reproduce the issue with one controlled test and note the device, browser, and connection.
  2. Ask the respondent to reopen the form in a fresh tab and retry.
  3. If recording keeps failing, point them to Voice or Text so they can still submit.
  4. Retest on another device to rule out a local problem.

A message you can send to respondents

“Please reopen the form and allow camera/microphone permissions. If recording still fails, continue with Voice or Text mode and we can retry Video after submission.”

Troubleshoot without guessing

  • Change one setting at a time so you can see which change fixed the problem.
  • Retest on each browser and device after every fix.
  • Write down the root cause and add it to your form checklist.

Common mistakes

  • Denying permissions once and never rechecking browser settings.
  • Leaving only Video mode enabled with no fallback.
  • Troubleshooting on one device only and assuming the issue applies everywhere.
