What this guide covers
A RecRam video form can accept four reply modes: Video, Voice, Screen Recording, and Text. The modes you enable on a question decide how easy it is to answer and how much context you get back. Choosing them well improves both completion rate and response quality.
This guide explains each mode, suggests combinations by use case, and covers recording time limits, text fallback, and screen recording for product feedback.
The four reply modes
- Video Recording: best for emotion, tone, and richer qualitative context.
- Voice Recording: lower friction, good for fast responses.
- Screen Recording: best for product walkthroughs, bug reports, and UX feedback.
- Text: a reliable fallback for people who prefer not to use their camera or microphone.
Recommended combinations
- Hiring and onboarding: Video + Voice, with Text as a fallback.
- Product feedback and bug reporting: Screen Recording + Voice, with Text as a fallback.
- Fast pulse checks: Voice + Text.
Set reply modes on a question
- Open the question in the form builder.
- Enable the reply modes that match your audience’s comfort and your use case.
- Set recording limits that suit your plan and workflow (see the next section).
- Submit internal test responses on desktop and on mobile.
Set recording time limits
Recording limits are one of the settings that affect completion rate, so set them on purpose rather than leaving them to chance. The maximum recording length is 10 minutes on both the Starter and Professional plans. Set the limit for each question according to your workflow, then test it the same way a respondent would.
Offer a text fallback for camera-shy respondents
Not everyone wants to appear on camera. If Video is the only option, some people will leave instead of answering. Enable Text, and Voice where it fits, so everyone has a way to respond.
A fallback also keeps people moving when their camera or microphone is blocked. They can switch to Voice or Text and finish the form. See Fix Camera, Microphone, and Recording Problems.
Use screen recording for product feedback
Screen Recording captures product walkthroughs and issue reports, which makes it the right mode for bug reports and UX feedback. RecRam also supports screen plus face recording for product feedback.
Whenever you ask for screen-based feedback, also enable a fallback mode such as Voice or Text. Some respondents won’t be able to share their screen.
Common mistakes
- Forcing only video for all respondents.
- Requesting screen-based feedback without enabling a fallback mode.
- Skipping end-to-end testing after changing reply settings.
