What is an async video interview?
An async video interview is a hiring step where candidates record answers to preset questions on their own schedule, and the hiring team reviews the recordings later. Nobody books a slot. The recruiter writes the questions once, shares a single link, and answers arrive as video.
The trade-offs, and when a live interview is better
It replaces the first-round phone screen. A screen that costs 30 minutes of a recruiter's calendar per candidate becomes a recording the team can watch at 2× speed, skip through, or forward to a hiring manager without arranging anything.
The trade-off is real: async removes the back-and-forth of a live conversation, so it suits structured screening questions rather than open discussion. Most teams use it for the first round and keep live interviews for later stages, where the conversation matters more than the throughput.
Because every candidate answers the same questions in the same order, the recordings are directly comparable — which is the part a scheduled phone screen cannot give you, since each call drifts wherever the conversation goes.

How does an async video interview work?
Write the questions once.
Record a short video prompt per question, or type them. The same set goes to every candidate, which is what makes the answers comparable.

Answer once, then get on with the day.
Candidates open the link in whatever browser they already have — no account, no app, nothing to schedule. They record video, audio or text, and can re-record before submitting. Partial answers save as they go, so a dropped connection loses nothing.

Async or live: which should you use?
Async is not a replacement for live interviewing. It replaces the first round — and on 2 of these 7 dimensions, live is the better tool.
| Dimension | Async | Live |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduling | None — candidates answer whenever | A calendar slot both sides must keep |
| Review speed | Watch at 2×, skip, or read the transcript | Real time, once |
| Comparability | Identical questions, identical order | Drifts with the conversation |
| Follow-up questions | Not possible mid-answer | Immediate |
| Candidate rapport | Lower — nobody is listening yet | Higher |
| Time zones | Irrelevant | A constraint |
| Best used for | First-round screening at volume | Final rounds and senior roles |
Most teams run async for the first round and keep live for the rest. The two are stages, not alternatives.
From application to shortlist — in 3 video steps
Replace phone screens with async video interviews. Candidates record answers on their own time, AI handles the analysis.
Video Screening Interview
Send this form to applicants. They introduce themselves and answer your key questions on camera — no scheduling needed.
Culture Fit Assessment
Shortlisted candidates share their values and work style via video. AI detects alignment with your company culture.
Post-Interview Candidate Feedback
Ask every candidate how the process felt — including the ones you turned down. It is the cheapest way to find out where your funnel loses people.

Is async screening right for your team?
Worth it for
- High-volume first-round screening, where the same questions go to everyone
- Distributed teams hiring across time zones
- Roles where communication is the thing you are assessing
- Small teams without a scheduling coordinator
Use a live interview for
- Final-round interviews, where the conversation is the point
- Senior or executive hiring, where candidates expect a person on the other end
- Roles needing live technical problem-solving or pair work
When is a dedicated interview platform the better buy?
Hireflix, Spark Hire, Willo and VidCruiter are built for hiring and nothing else. They carry ATS integrations, panel scoring workflows and compliance features RecRam does not have. If async screening is the only video your organisation needs, buy one of them.
RecRam earns its place when hiring is not the only team that needs video. The same $29 a month that covers interview screening also covers Video Magnet, Room, Showcase and Video Forms for the rest of the business — customer feedback, testimonials, support threads.
